Highett homes often mix older brick veneers, renovated weatherboards and compact unit blocks—upgrades can leave mismatched switchboards, DIY wiring and older smoke alarm setups that need a careful visual safety check.

Our comprehensive service includes everything you need to make an informed decision about your property.
We inspect the switchboard for visible defects such as heat marks, corrosion, damaged covers, missing blanks, untidy cabling and unclear circuit labelling. This matters because poor enclosure integrity and messy terminations can signal higher risk and make future electrical work slower and more expensive.
We visually confirm whether safety switches appear to be installed and note how they’re arranged (whole-of-board vs selected circuits). We also record any obvious signs of missing protection where you’d typically expect it in a modern setup, so you can plan follow-up testing or upgrades with an electrician.
We check exposed wiring around accessible areas such as garages, under-house spaces (where available), roof access points (visual only), and near the switchboard. We look for brittle insulation, unsupported runs, poor penetrations, makeshift joins and other visual red flags that can indicate ageing or non-compliant alterations.
We scan representative power points, light switches and visible fittings for damage, cracking, loose plates, scorch marks, or signs of moisture impact. These issues can point to overheating, water ingress or unsafe DIY replacements that should be addressed before regular use.
We note the type of smoke alarms visible (hardwired or battery), their apparent placement, and obvious issues such as missing units, damage or poor positioning. While we don’t certify compliance, we highlight gaps so you can align the property with Victorian smoke alarm requirements through the right trade.
Highett renovations can leave older circuits feeding new rooms, mixed hardware brands, or unlabelled additions. We look for visual indicators of piecemeal electrical work—such as inconsistent cabling routes, improvised mounting and altered switchboard layouts—then recommend targeted electrician checks where the risk is highest.

Our Highett electrical visual inspection covers accessible, visible components such as the switchboard condition, obvious wiring concerns, the apparent presence of safety switches, and the visible smoke alarm setup. It does not include electrical testing, dismantling of the switchboard, or certification of compliance. If we see warning signs, we recommend follow-up testing and repairs by a licensed electrician before relying on the system.
We can identify common visual indicators that often trigger upgrades, such as damaged or missing covers, corrosion, heat marks, poor labelling, untidy cable entries and older-style components. A visual inspection can’t confirm electrical performance or fault conditions, but it can highlight whether the board looks dated or unsafe. We’ll explain what we observed and what an electrician should check or quote.
Yes, we visually note the smoke alarms we can see, including their apparent type (battery or hardwired), visible condition and whether there are obvious gaps. We don’t perform compliance certification or electrical tests, but we flag concerns so you can address them quickly. If the property is being rented out, we recommend confirming the setup with the relevant compliance requirements through a qualified professional.
They can be, especially where the property has had partial renovations over the years. In Highett, it’s common to see a newer kitchen or extension paired with an older switchboard layout or older wiring in original areas. That mix can create confusion around circuit labelling, safety switch coverage and load capacity. A visual inspection helps you spot the tell-tale signs that warrant electrician testing before settlement.
Unit blocks can involve shared meters, common-area lighting, and older building electrical infrastructure alongside updated individual units. You might see a modernised internal fit-out but an older switchboard arrangement, unclear circuit identification, or differing smoke alarm setups between lots. We focus on what’s accessible within your lot and note anything that suggests you should request extra information from the body corporate or organise targeted electrician checks.
