Heatherton blocks can sit on reactive clay and areas of older fill near industrial pockets and drainage lines—small set-out or moisture-barrier mistakes before the pour can become long-term cracking and damp problems.

Our comprehensive service includes everything you need to make an informed decision about your property.
We check that the base is properly prepared, trimmed and free of soft spots, uncontrolled fill and debris that can settle after the pour. In Heatherton, where sites can be reworked during knock-down rebuilds, an uneven or poorly compacted base can contribute to slab movement and cracking.
We review formwork alignment, edge thickening and step-downs against the available documentation and what’s visible on site. Correct beam widths, depths and straightness help the slab carry loads properly and reduce the risk of out-of-square walls and follow-on framing issues.
We inspect mesh and bar placement, laps, tie-offs and support chairs/spacers so reinforcement is positioned to work within the slab, not sitting on the ground. If steel is too low, bent, poorly lapped or inadequately supported, it can reduce the slab’s ability to manage shrinkage and ground movement.
We check the plastic membrane for correct overlaps, taping, tears, punctures and continuity around penetrations and perimeter edges. A compromised vapour barrier can allow ground moisture to track into the slab and internal finishes, increasing the risk of damp, odours and flooring failures.
We examine pipe and conduit penetrations, sleeve locations and sealing readiness so the pour doesn’t lock in preventable gaps. Where termite management measures are required, we check that provisions visible at this stage are installed and positioned so the system can be completed effectively.
We look for visible signs that water will be managed away from the slab area, including falls, temporary drainage paths and any blocked low points that may pond under the membrane. Good water control before and during the pour reduces the chance of undermining the base and affecting slab performance.

Book once the site is boxed up and ready for the pour—formwork in place, steel down, membrane installed and services positioned—but before concrete arrives. In Heatherton, builders often move quickly once the base is prepared, so aim to schedule 24–48 hours ahead where possible. We’ll attend on site, document visible items, and provide a report you can forward to the site supervisor.
On knock-down rebuilds in Heatherton, we often see membranes punctured by foot traffic or sharp fill, reinforcement sitting too low due to missing chairs, and penetrations that aren’t properly sealed or sleeved. We also see formwork and edge beams that need tightening up before the pour. These are practical fixes at this stage, but they’re costly once concrete is placed.
We don’t perform geotechnical testing on the day, but we do review the on-site preparation and compare what’s installed to the available drawings and specifications you provide. If what we see on the ground doesn’t appear consistent with the intended design—such as beam dimensions, reinforcement layout or site preparation quality—we’ll flag it and recommend clarifying with your engineer or builder before proceeding.
Before the pour, it’s important to confirm the subgrade isn’t soft or pumping, that water isn’t ponding under the membrane, and that temporary drainage is keeping the slab area dry. We also check membrane integrity and sealing around penetrations because wet conditions can make moisture control failures more likely. If the base is saturated, it may need drying time or rework before concrete is placed.
You’ll receive a written report with clear photos, itemised findings and practical recommendations to rectify before the pour. The best approach is to email it to your site supervisor and request written confirmation of what will be fixed, including any supporting photos once changes are made. If needed, we can re-attend before concrete placement to verify rectifications where access remains available.
