Our comprehensive service includes everything you need to make an informed decision about your property.
We visually confirm whether smoke detectors are present across accessible areas, with extra attention to bedrooms, nearby hallways and common escape routes. Missing detectors are one of the simplest—and most serious—issues to identify early.
We assess how detector locations relate to sleeping areas (including rooms that may be used as bedrooms, such as converted studies or garage conversions). Poor placement can delay alerting occupants at night, even when a detector exists elsewhere in the home.
Where a Heatherton home includes stairs, split levels or a second storey, we note whether detectors appear to cover each level. Changes in elevation and stairwells can affect where alarms should be positioned for effective warning.
We look for detectors mounted in a sensible position and note obvious issues such as placement too close to corners, vents, or areas where airflow may interfere. We also flag detectors that appear painted over, loose, or physically damaged.
Where possible, we note visible indicators like yellowing, cracking, missing covers, or dated labels. While we don’t certify performance from a visual check, obvious wear can be a strong cue to replace rather than rely on an ageing unit.
Your report records detector locations and highlights any gaps or concerns in plain language. This gives you a practical checklist to discuss with a qualified electrician or smoke alarm provider—especially helpful during settlement, pre-lease checks, or post-renovation tidy-ups.

This service is a visual assessment focused on confirming the presence and placement of smoke detectors in accessible areas. We document where detectors are installed and flag obvious concerns such as missing units, poor positioning, or visible damage/ageing. If you need functional testing, replacement, or compliance work, we recommend arranging that with a qualified electrician or smoke alarm specialist after you receive the report.
In older Heatherton homes, we often find detectors installed only in one central area rather than positioned to effectively cover sleeping zones and hallway escape paths. We also see detectors that look old, discoloured, or mounted in awkward spots after internal reconfigurations. A visual assessment helps you map what’s currently in place and highlights where detector locations may not suit the home’s current layout.
Yes. Townhouses and villa units can have different risks because bedrooms may be upstairs, corridors can be tight, and stairwells change how smoke travels. We visually check detector presence and placement across accessible levels and note any apparent gaps, especially between sleeping areas and exit routes. You’ll receive report notes that make it easier to plan follow-up improvements with an installer.
It can. Conversions and extensions can create new sleeping areas or change how people move through the home at night. If a room is used as a bedroom, it’s important that smoke detector placement sensibly supports early warning for that space and the path to exits. During the assessment, we note the current detector locations relative to the updated layout and flag potential coverage gaps for follow-up.
